Everything I had hoped to experience over the course of the next three months while living in Los Angeles was summed up last Tuesday. I got off work and drove home with no intentions of doing much that night. After conversing with one of the other guys that live in the house, we Googled the comedy clubs around here to note some upcoming shows to explore. The first place I came across was the Improv Hollywood. Anyone who is anyone in stand up comedy has graced that infamous stage including Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock and Aziz Ansari to name a few. That night there was an event known as Comedy Juice happening and the headliner was Adam Devine, the lead in Comedy Central's hilarious series Workaholics. Devine is the man and for $14 we decided it was well worth it to see him and a few other acts we hadn't heard of.
We hopped in the car and cruised to the always vibrant Melrose district. Tickets were nearly sold out and the line was long. We waited for 30 minutes, wrapped our wrists in the Hawaiian print bracelets that permitted us to drink and took our seats. Within minutes we had a couple White Russians at the table that was no more than 25 feet from the stage. The show began and it was a great vibe in a very intimate setting. The crowd was into it and awaiting the presence of Devine when the MC dropped a bomb on the whole crowd.
"You have all probably seen this guy around Comedy Central, welcome to the stage...Daniel Tosh". No body emitted a sound just waiting to see if this guy was full of shit or not. Sure enough the gangly comedian himself hits the stage and begins laying into his newly formed routine. No one could believe it and the entire crowd nearly in tears, less the few women in the crowd who were offended, but I cannot imagine that's unusual.
Following Tosh, Devine got up to perform and after a great bit we thought it was the best night ever. That is until Craig Robinson (Daryl from the Office, Matheson from Pineapple Express) and Roastmaster Jeffrey Ross hit the stage for over 30 minutes of Improv including a piano and on the spot roasts. The night could not have been better and for $14 and a two drink minimum it was so well worth it. We were a group of four out of about 120 that got to witness an epic night at the Improv.
Thank you Hollywood!
